Atlas vs GAF Shingles: How They Compare

A Patriot Roofing van parked in front of a brick ranch home in Alexander while the crew tears off and replaces the roof

Atlas and GAF both make good architectural shingles with Class A fire ratings, Class 4 impact-rated options and Lifetime Limited warranties, so the choice comes down to three things: algae protection, how the wind warranty is earned, and which warranty your installer can actually register. Atlas factory-applies 3M Scotchgard Protector to its StormMaster Shake and Pinnacle shingles and covers algae for life on a single-family home; GAF lists 25 years of algae coverage on Timberline HDZ and AS II and 30 years on Timberline UHDZ. GAF's wind warranty has no maximum speed with enough GAF accessories; Atlas lists 130 to 150 mph by line. Here is the side-by-side.

We are Patriot Roofing and Restoration in Maumelle. Atlas is our primary shingle line and leads our recommendations, and we install GAF and just about any other brand on request, for example to match an HOA rule or an existing section of roof. We are an Atlas PRO+ contractor at the Gold level, which is a rewards level based on the Atlas product we install, not a workmanship audit. We hold no GAF certification. Every Atlas fact below comes from atlasroofing.com and every GAF fact from gaf.com, checked between November 1 and November 8, 2026. Availability varies by region, so confirm the exact shingle on your quote.

Atlas lists all of its lines as Class A fire resistant in its July 2026 product reference guide. GAF lists its Timberline shingles as Class A (ANSI/UL 790) and as meeting ASTM D7158 Class H and ASTM D3161 Class F wind standards. GAF says Timberline UHDZ is sold in the US only.

Hail: Class 4 against Class 4

In Central Arkansas, spring hail is usually the first question. Class 4 is the highest UL 2218 impact rating, and a Class 4 shingle may qualify for a homeowners insurance discount; discounts vary by insurer, so ask your agent before you choose.

  • Atlas. StormMaster Shake and Pinnacle Impact are Class 4. Atlas lists Core4 Polymer Modified Technology on StormMaster Shake and polymer modified technology on Pinnacle Impact. Pinnacle Pristine, Pinnacle Sun and ProLam are Class 3.
  • GAF. Timberline AS II and Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat are Class 4. GAF says AS II uses SBS polymer-modified asphalt and UHDZ uses its UltraMat fiberglass mat. Timberline HDZ, GAF's #1-selling shingle, is Class 3 on packages that carry the Class 3 statement.

A test rating is not a hail warranty. GAF says it makes no warranty about the impact performance of its shingles against hail. Hail damage on any brand is normally a homeowners insurance matter. Our impact-resistant shingle guide explains the classes.

Algae streaks in Arkansas humidity

Black streaks from blue-green algae show up on older roofs all over a humid state like Arkansas. This is the clearest difference between the two brands.

  • Atlas factory-applies 3M Scotchgard Protector to StormMaster Shake and the Pinnacle lines. Its standard residential warranty (ATL-267639-01, October 2026) gives those shingles lifetime algae coverage on a single-family home: for the first 10 years Atlas covers cleaning, repair or replacement including labor and tear-off, and after that the cost to clean the affected shingles. The hips and ridge must be Atlas Scotchgard hip and ridge shingles. ProLam carries 10 years.
  • GAF lists a 25-year StainGuard Plus algae warranty on Timberline HDZ and AS II packages with the StainGuard Plus logo, and a 30-year StainGuard Plus PRO warranty on Timberline UHDZ, which GAF says has 10% more of its algae-fighting capsules.

This is one of the two reasons we lead with Atlas: in Arkansas humidity, lifetime algae coverage matters more than it would in a dry state.

Wind: how each warranty is earned

  • Atlas. The standard residential warranty covers StormMaster Shake to 150 mph and the Pinnacle lines to 130 mph with a 4-nail installation, for 15 years, on shingles marked "Built with HP42 Technology." ProLam is covered to 130 mph with 6 nails or 110 mph with 4. Atlas says coverage up to 160 mph is available on qualifying Atlas Signature Select systems.
  • GAF. GAF's 15-year WindProven Limited Wind Warranty on its LayerLock Timberline shingles has no maximum wind speed, but it requires at least 4 qualifying GAF accessories, such as starter strip, roof deck protection, ridge cap, leak barrier or attic ventilation.

With the required accessories, GAF's "no maximum" is a real advantage. On either brand the wind number depends on how the roof is built, so ask which starter, ridge and nail pattern your quote includes. Our post on roofing nails explains why nailing matters.

Warranty structure: where the installer matters

Both makers call their main warranty Lifetime Limited, and both define lifetime by the owner, not the roof. Atlas's lifetime applies to the original owner of a single-family site-built detached home, with one transfer allowed in the first 10 years for a $100 fee paid within 60 days of the sale. GAF's lifetime applies to a single-family detached home owned by individuals; other owners get 40 years.

The bigger difference is what it takes to get more than the basic warranty.

  • Atlas includes a 10-year non-prorated Premium Protection period in its standard warranty, with no registration required. The Atlas Signature Select system warranty extends Premium Protection to 20 years on StormMaster Shake and 15 years on the Pinnacle lines and ProLam, covering non-prorated labor, materials and tear-off, when a qualifying Atlas shingle, Atlas hip and ridge, Atlas underlayment and an Atlas starter, ice and water or ventilation accessory are installed and registered within 60 days.
  • GAF lists a 10-year Smart Choice non-prorated period at its two base levels, Shingle and Accessory and Roofing System, with no contractor requirement and no workmanship coverage. Its System Plus, Silver Pledge, Golden Pledge and President's Club levels need a GAF Certified, Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor, more GAF accessories, or both. Our post Are GAF Shingles Good? walks through every GAF level.

So the fair comparison is not shingle against shingle; it is the warranty your roofer can register. Because we install and register full Atlas Signature Select systems, an Atlas roof from us can carry the extended system warranty. A GAF roof from us carries GAF's base level that applies without a certified contractor (Roofing System when the quote includes at least 3 qualifying GAF accessories). That is the second reason we lead with Atlas.

Size and look

Atlas's data sheets list Pinnacle Impact, Pinnacle Pristine and ProLam at 42 by 14 inches with a 6-inch exposure. GAF lists Timberline HDZ at 13-1/4 by 39-3/8 inches with a 5-5/8 inch exposure, 64 pieces and 3 bundles per square. Atlas's shingle is a little larger, so there are fewer pieces per square. See our guides to Atlas shingle colors and GAF Timberline HDZ colors, and look at a real shingle in daylight before you decide.

Which one fits your roof?

  • Hail is your main worry: compare a Class 4 line from either maker, and make sure the hip and ridge on the quote is impact rated too.
  • You hate black streaks: weigh Atlas's lifetime Scotchgard algae coverage against GAF's 25 or 30 years.
  • You want materials and labor covered together: ask which system warranty your roofer can register, and get the level in writing.
  • You need to match a neighbor or an HOA color: the color may decide the brand, and that is fine. We install both.

Our roof packages are built around impact rating: Guardian uses a Class 4 impact-rated shingle, Defender a Class 3 impact-rated architectural shingle, and Shield a standard architectural shingle. Each comes with its own Patriot Leak Free Guarantee: 10 years on Guardian, 5 years on Defender and 2 years on Shield, and 15 years on our Armor metal roof. See all four on our asphalt shingle roofing page, and our Atlas vs Owens Corning comparison if a third brand is on your list.

Frequently asked questions

Is Atlas better than GAF?

Neither is better on every point. Atlas stands out on algae protection, with 3M Scotchgard and lifetime algae coverage, and on a system warranty that does not depend on holding a GAF certification. GAF stands out on wind, with no maximum wind speed when enough GAF accessories are installed, and on how widely its shingles are sold. The better choice depends on your roof and the warranty your installer can register.

Which is better for hail, Atlas or GAF?

Compare Class 4 to Class 4: Atlas StormMaster Shake or Pinnacle Impact against GAF Timberline AS II or Timberline UHDZ. All four carry the top UL 2218 rating. An impact rating is not a hail warranty.

Is GAF Timberline HDZ Class 4?

No. GAF lists Timberline HDZ as Class 3 on packages with the Class 3 statement. Its Class 4 Timberline shingles are AS II and UHDZ.

Does Patriot install GAF shingles?

Yes, on request. Atlas is our primary line, and we hold no certification, preferred status or system warranty with GAF.
