Are GAF Shingles Good? A Fair Look at the Whole Line

Yes. GAF shingles are good, mainstream shingles from a large, established maker. GAF calls itself the largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer in North America, its Timberline shingles carry a Class A fire rating and a Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects, and it sells two Class 4 impact-rated shingles. What most homeowners do not hear is that how good your GAF warranty is depends a great deal on who installs the roof and which GAF accessories go on it. Here is a fair look at the GAF line-up, where it is strong, where the fine print matters, and how to judge a GAF quote.

Every GAF fact below comes from GAF's own website, checked on November 8, 2026. We are not ranking GAF against other makers; we are laying out what GAF says about its own products.

The GAF shingle line-up at a glance

GAF groups its asphalt shingles into 3-tab, Timberline architectural and Designer lines. The ones a Central Arkansas homeowner is most likely to be quoted:

GAF lists every Timberline shingle above as Class A fire rated (ANSI/UL 790) and as meeting ASTM D7158 Class H and ASTM D3161 Class F wind standards. We repair 3-tab roofs but do not install new 3-tab shingles; our GAF 3-tab colors post covers Royal Sovereign.

Where GAF is strong

• Two Class 4 options. GAF says Timberline AS II uses SBS polymer-modified asphalt to make the shingle more flexible, and that Timberline UHDZ uses its UltraMat fiberglass mat. Both pass UL 2218 with a Class 4 rating, the highest possible. In a part of the country where spring hail is a regular event, having Class 4 in the line matters.
• Wind coverage with no speed limit. GAF's WindProven Limited Wind Warranty on its LayerLock Timberline shingles has no maximum wind speed, as long as the roof includes the required GAF accessories.
• Algae coverage. GAF lists a 25-year algae warranty against blue-green algae on Timberline HDZ and AS II packages that carry the StainGuard Plus logo, and a 30-year StainGuard Plus PRO warranty on UHDZ, which GAF says has 10% more of its algae-fighting capsules.
• Availability. GAF says Timberline is its #1-selling shingle brand. A widely sold shingle is usually easier to match years later if a few shingles need replacing.

Where the fine print matters

GAF does not warrant against hail

Class 4 is a test rating, not a hail warranty. GAF says it makes no express or implied warranty about the impact performance of Timberline UHDZ against hail, and that Timberline AS II is not warranted to withstand hail damage. GAF also notes that insurance discounts may not be available in your area. Class 4 shingles may qualify for a homeowners insurance discount; it varies by insurer, so ask your agent before you choose. The best GAF warranties depend on the contractor

This is the part that changes the value of a GAF roof the most. GAF's residential warranty chart lists six levels for Timberline shingles:

• Shingle and Accessory. Comes with the product, no contractor or accessory requirement. 10-year Smart Choice non-prorated period, no workmanship coverage, no tear-off or disposal coverage.
• Roofing System. Timberline plus at least 3 qualifying GAF accessories, no contractor requirement. Still a 10-year non-prorated period and no workmanship coverage.
• System Plus. Needs a GAF Certified, Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor. 50-year non-prorated period on materials and tear-off when necessary, but no workmanship coverage.
• Silver Pledge. Needs a Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor and at least 4 accessories. Adds workmanship coverage: 10 years on HDZ, 15 years on AS II and UHDZ.
• Golden Pledge and President's Club. Need a Master Elite contractor (President's Club needs a current award winner) and at least 5 accessories, with longer workmanship coverage.

So two homes with the same GAF shingle can carry very different warranties. If GAF's enhanced coverage is the reason you want GAF, ask the roofer which GAF level they will register, and get it in writing.

"Lifetime" means the owner, not the roof

GAF says its Lifetime coverage applies only to shingles and accessories on a single-family detached home owned by individuals; other owners get 40 years. A second owner keeps coverage only if it was properly transferred during the Smart Choice period. It is not a promise the roof lasts forever. In Arkansas heat and storms, we tell homeowners to plan on about 15 to 20 years from any asphalt shingle roof, because manufacturer ratings assume milder climates.

What a GAF roof from Patriot includes

Why we lead with Atlas

We recommend Atlas, and we are open about why. First, 3M Scotchgard Protector is factory applied to the Atlas lines we install, and Atlas covers algae streaking for the lifetime of its warranty on its Pinnacle and StormMaster Shake lines. In a humid state where black streaks show up on older roofs, that is longer than a 25- or 30-year algae term. How to judge any GAF quote

• Which GAF shingle is it, and what UL 2218 class is printed on the package?
• Which GAF accessories are included, and do they qualify for WindProven?
• Which GAF warranty level will be registered, and is the contractor certified for it?
• Does the warranty cover labor and tear-off, or only materials?
• Does the roofer guarantee the roof will not leak, or only "workmanship"?
• Will you get a written inspection report with photos, and a link to every photo of your job?

Are GAF shingles good quality?

Yes. They are widely used shingles with published test ratings, Class A fire ratings and a Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects. The main things to check are the impact class of the exact shingle and which warranty level your roofer can register.

Which GAF shingles are Class 4?

GAF lists Timberline AS II and Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat as UL 2218 Class 4. Timberline HDZ is Class 3, on packages with the Class 3 statement.

Do GAF shingles cover hail damage?

No. GAF says it makes no warranty about impact performance against hail. Hail damage is normally a homeowners insurance matter, not a shingle warranty claim.

Do I need a GAF certified roofer?

Only for GAF's enhanced warranties. GAF's Shingle and Accessory and Roofing System levels have no contractor requirement; System Plus and above need a GAF certified contractor.
