North Little Rock sits across the Arkansas River from downtown Little Rock, with 64,591 people at the 2020 Census, about 10 miles from our Maumelle office. From Argenta to Indian Hills, it has some of the oldest housing in Pulaski County.
North Little Rock: Argenta's commission, Park Hill bungalows and a heavy canopy
In North Little Rock, Park Hill's 568 historic properties date mostly from the 1920s and 1940s and Lakewood's median home was built in 1969.
Argenta is the one part of the city where exterior work needs a commission's approval. Inside the area bounded by Poplar Street, 9th Street and North and South Broadway, the Historic District Commission issues a Certificate of Appropriateness after a public hearing. Park Hill is also on the National Register, but its designation is honorary and carries no architectural rules.
Trees shape the roof work here. About 44.3% of the city is under tree canopy, and the March 2023 tornado took down an estimated 10,000 trees in Burns Park alone while tearing entire roofs off some homes on Flintrock Road in Indian Hills.

How old are North Little Rock roofs?
About 76% of North Little Rock's homes were built before 2000, and half in 1975 or earlier. In neighborhoods hit by the 2023 tornado, a roof patched in a hurry may not have been properly repaired. If yours was patched, an inspection will tell you whether the patch is holding.

Roofing questions from North Little Rock
My house is in Argenta. Do I need approval for a new roof?
Yes, if it is inside the district's 258 properties, which date from the late 1880s to the 1940s. Argenta is a local ordinance district, and exterior changes need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the North Little Rock Historic District Commission after a public hearing. The commission approved a re-roof in composition shingles at its May 14, 2020 meeting. We help you prepare the application.
Does Park Hill's historic listing restrict what I can do to my roof?
No. Park Hill is on the National Register, but the designation is honorary and is not subject to rules on architectural change.
Can I use metal roofing on an Argenta house?
The commission has approved metal roofs on back porches of houses in the district. The minutes we found do not cover metal on a main roof, so we would take that question to the commission before any work.
Can I use fiber-cement siding on my Argenta house?
Not on a historic structure, going by what commissioners have said. At their April 2019 meeting they stated that artificial materials such as Hardie Board are not permitted on historic structures in Argenta, though they are on new construction, and in 2016 they recommended wood over fiber-cement board for one house's rear siding.
