Austin is a fast-growing Lonoke County city of 3,460 people at the 2020 Census, about 26 miles from our Maumelle office. Its homes are among the newest anywhere we work, which changes the kind of roof questions Austin homeowners tend to have.
Austin's subdivision boom and the storms since
Austin was a town of 235 people in 1990. Subdivisions built west of the highway after that pushed it to 605 by 2000, 2,038 by 2010 and 3,460 by 2020, so most Austin homes date from the last 35 years, and roofs on the earliest of those subdivisions are past the 15 to 20 years asphalt shingles typically last in Arkansas.
Two nights in April 2022 show what those roofs have been through. On April 11, the National Weather Service logged 1-inch and then 1.75-inch hail in Austin four minutes apart, with 2-inch hail in Cabot the same evening. Two days later a 61-knot gust east of Ward knocked out power in Ward, Austin and parts of Cabot. If your roof has not been looked at since then, a roof inspection will show whether that hail left bruised shingles.
Long before the subdivisions, Austin was orchard country, with the Murrell Nursery among its fruit growers, and Camp Nelson, a Confederate winter camp that became a cemetery, is part of its Civil War past. The city incorporated on October 22, 1895, is still in the Cabot school system, and every September Austin Fest raises money for the volunteer fire department with a parade, a car show and live music.

Roofing questions from Austin
My Austin subdivision home is only 15 or 20 years old. Could it already need a roof?
It can. Asphalt shingles in Arkansas typically last 15 to 20 years, and Austin homes built in the post-1990 boom have since taken 1.75-inch hail in town on April 11, 2022. Age plus a hail hit is the usual reason a newer roof needs replacing early.
Does Austin require a permit to replace a roof?
No. Austin's permits page ties building permits to new projects, such as a structure that adds a roof line, and a roof replacement on an existing house does not require a city permit.
Is the old part of town near the railroad different from the newer subdivisions?
Today's Austin began as Austin Station on the railroad built in 1872 and 1873, while most of its homes came with the subdivisions west of the highway after 1990. Older homes near the tracks can have a different roof history, so we look at each one rather than assuming its age.
Has Austin had hail since the April 2022 storm?
Yes. Golf-ball hail fell just south of town on October 15, 2022, and quarter-size hail fell in Austin on August 18, 2024, according to NWS Little Rock Storm Data. A roof inspection will tell you whether either storm left damage on a roof no one has checked since.
We have Cabot schools but live in Austin. Do Cabot's roofing rules apply to us?
Not inside Austin's city limits. Austin has been its own city since October 22, 1895, even though it belongs to the Cabot school system.
