Jacksonville is home to Little Rock Air Force Base and 29,477 people at the 2020 Census, about 17 miles from our Maumelle office. It took a direct hit from the March 2023 tornado.
Jacksonville's homes were built in waves around the ordnance plant and the air base
Jacksonville's housing came in two big pushes. The town incorporated in September 1941 while the Arkansas Ordnance Plant was going up, and it ran short of housing almost at once. After the plant closed and the population fell to 2,474 in 1950, Little Rock Air Force Base opened in October 1955 and the city grew to 14,488 by 1960 and 27,589 by 1980. Much of the city's housing dates from those base-driven decades.
Jacksonville is also a city of landlords and renters as much as owners. Only about half of its homes, 49.6%, are owner-occupied, so a roof decision here is often made by a landlord rather than the person living under it. The city also counts 2,091 veterans, and the base itself covers 6,412 acres inside the city limits.
