Benton is Saline County's largest city, with 35,014 people at the 2020 Census, and it sits about 23 miles southwest of our Maumelle office along I-30. Its neighborhoods range from older streets near Tyndall Park to newer subdivisions on the edges of town.
Benton roofs after the April 2025 storms
In early April 2025 the Saline River at Benton crested at 26 feet, its highest level since December 2009 and about four and a half feet short of the 1927 record. The same storms brought high winds; Saline County officials counted about 165 damaged homes after the first round of assessments. If your roof went through that week and nobody has looked at it since, it is worth a check.
Benton roughly doubled from 7,453 housing units in 1990 to 14,785 in 2020, and about two out of three homes are owner-occupied (68.2 percent).
Benton has been the county seat almost from the start. The town began in 1833, took its name from Missouri senator Thomas Hart Benton, was incorporated on March 15, 1836, and won the courthouse over Collegeville and Caldwellton. Thirteen of its properties are on the National Register, among them the Shoppach House from the 1850s, the first brick house in town, and the 1893 Gann Building that now holds the Gann Museum. Every fall since 2000 the Salt Bowl against Bryant has drawn crowds averaging more than 20,000, and since August 2021 high school students from six districts have trained at the Saline County Career Technical Campus.
Trees have taken a beating here in 2026. On March 7 a National Weather Service survey found microburst damage with winds estimated at 80 to 90 mph and more than 150 trees affected about 5 miles from town, and on August 26 trees and power lines came down across the county.

How old are Benton roofs?
Half of Benton's homes were built in 1995 or earlier. On a house that age, the roof on it today is often the second one, and the first replacement may itself be nearing the end of the 15 to 20 years asphalt shingles last here. Roofing questions from Benton
Does the Benton Historic District Commission have to approve my new roof?
The city says the commission reviews certificates of appropriateness in the Commercial Historic District. That district is the 53 mostly commercial buildings around the Saline County Courthouse square, so most Benton houses fall outside it. If your building is on or near the square, check with the city before work starts.
My roof made it through the April 2025 flood and wind. Should I still have it checked?
Saline County counted about 165 damaged homes after those storms, and wind damage like lifted or creased shingles is easy to miss from the ground. Our roof inspection will show you whether there is damage worth claiming or repairing.
Benton was under a Flash Flood Warning in February 2023. Can gutters protect my house from that kind of rain?
Gutters cannot stop rising water, and the Saline River flooded at Benton on February 9 that month. Flash Flood Warnings went out for Benton again on February 24. What gutters can do is carry the roof's water off the house, and downspouts that empty well away from the foundation keep it out of the crawl space.
Did the April 11, 2022 hail reach Benton?
NWS Little Rock recorded one-inch hail 2.1 miles north of Benton that evening, as a swath of hail up to golf-ball size crossed from Hot Springs Village to Bryant. A roof that has not been checked since is worth a roof inspection to see whether it took hits.
