GAF 3-Tab Shingle Colors: Royal Sovereign Colors, Old and New
GAF's 3-tab shingle is Royal Sovereign, and today GAF names two colors for it on its product page: Charcoal and Weathered Gray. Older GAF literature shows a much longer list, including Ash Brown, Autumn Brown, Golden Cedar, Nickel Gray, Silver Lining, Slate and White, which is why many older 3-tab roofs in Central Arkansas are in colors that are hard to find now. Below is what GAF says about each, how to tell which color is on your roof, and what to do when a 3-tab roof needs repair.
We are Patriot Roofing and Restoration in Maumelle. We repair existing 3-tab roofs, but we no longer install new 3-tab roofs; when a 3-tab roof is worn out, we replace it with architectural or impact-rated shingles. Every GAF fact below comes from GAF's own website, checked on November 5, 2026. This is product information, not a recommendation of one brand over another.
GAF's current 3-tab colors
On its Royal Sovereign product page, GAF calls it America's #1-selling 3-tab shingle and answers the question of whether it is still made: GAF says Royal Sovereign shingles are still available in both colors:
- Charcoal: a dark gray to near-black blend.
- Weathered Gray: a lighter, softer gray.
The same page notes that some code approvals apply to White Royal Sovereign shingles from certain plants, but White is not one of the two colors GAF lists as available. GAF's shingle color guide groups 3-tab as its own category and, like every manufacturer, asks you to look at real shingle samples before you decide, because phone and computer screens show color differently.
The older Royal Sovereign color list
GAF still hosts a Royal Sovereign product information sheet dated October 18, 2016. It shows 13 colors:
- Ash Brown
- Autumn Brown
- Charcoal
- Cypress Tan
- Golden Cedar
- Nickel Gray
- Russet Red
- Sandrift
- Silver Lining
- Slate
- Summer Sage
- Weathered Gray
- White
That sheet marks colors by region and points readers to GAF's website to check what is sold in their area. If your roof went on years ago, it may be one of these colors even though GAF's current page names only two. That matters most when you need a repair, because the closest match you can buy today may not be the color on your roof.
What GAF says about Royal Sovereign
Color is only part of the story. Here is what GAF publishes about the shingle itself on its product page:
- Fire rating: UL listed to ANSI/UL 790 Class A.
- Wind: GAF lists ASTM D7158 Class H and ASTM D3161 Class F, and its FAQ says the shingles are warranted against winds up to 60 mph. GAF's 15-year WindProven wind warranty is a Timberline feature, not a Royal Sovereign one.
- Impact rating: GAF's page does not state an impact rating for Royal Sovereign.
- Algae: StainGuard protection against blue-green algae stains, with a 10-year StainGuard Algae Protection Limited Warranty on packages that carry the StainGuard logo.
- Warranty: a 25-year Limited Warranty with Smart Choice Protection, subject to GAF's written warranty terms.
- Size: GAF lists two nominal sizes, 12 x 36 inches (English) and 13-1/4 x 39-3/8 inches (metric). The English size has a 5 inch exposure, with 79 pieces, 3 bundles and 316 nails per square.
Those two sizes are worth knowing. A metric shingle will not line up course for course on a roof laid with 12 x 36 inch shingles, so a good 3-tab repair starts with measuring the shingles already on your roof, not just matching the color.
How to find out what color is on your roof
- Check your paperwork. A contract, invoice or warranty registration from the original roofer often names the brand and color.
- Look for leftover bundles. Builders and roofers often leave a partial bundle in the garage or attic. The wrapper names the product and color.
- Ask for a sample comparison. A roofer can hold current samples against a loose shingle from your roof in daylight.
- Expect some difference. Even a perfect color match will look newer than shingles that have been in the Arkansas sun for years. Granules wear and colors fade.
Repairing a 3-tab roof in Arkansas
If your 3-tab roof still has life left, a missing tab or a lifted shingle after a windstorm does not mean the whole roof has to go. We repair existing 3-tab roofs. On a roof repair visit, the $79.99 diagnostic fee includes our 21-point roof inspection, and we show you the photos on a tablet (Patriot Care Club members pay no service fee). Repairs are listed as Need To Do, Should Do and Could Do, and nothing is done until you approve it. Our published roof repair prices show the cost of each repair level up front.
Completed repairs carry our 365-Day Patriot Leak Free Guarantee: once all recommended repairs are done, if the roofing system leaks in the next 365 days, we make the repair at no charge, excluding acts of God, pre-existing conditions that were not repaired, manufacturer defects and animal damage.
When it is time to replace a 3-tab roof
We plan on 15 to 20 years for an asphalt shingle roof in Arkansas, because manufacturer ratings assume milder weather than our heat, humidity and hail. If your 3-tab roof is near that age, has many missing or brittle tabs, or keeps needing repairs, replacement usually makes more sense than chasing a discontinued color.
We do not install new 3-tab roofs. Our asphalt shingle roofs start with standard architectural shingles in our Shield package and go up to Class 3 and Class 4 impact-rated shingles in Defender and Guardian. Atlas is our primary shingle line, and we install just about any other brand on request. Our post on architectural shingles vs 3-tab compares the two side by side, and if you like the GAF look, our GAF Timberline HDZ colors post covers GAF's architectural palette.
Frequently asked questions
What colors does GAF make in 3-tab shingles?
GAF's 3-tab line is Royal Sovereign. Its product page names two available colors, Charcoal and Weathered Gray, as of November 5, 2026.
Is GAF Royal Sovereign discontinued?
No. GAF's product page says Royal Sovereign is still available in Charcoal and Weathered Gray. Several older colors from GAF's 2016 sheet are no longer named on the product page.
Can I match my old 3-tab color for a repair?
Sometimes. Start with the size and the color on your paperwork or a leftover bundle. If the original color is no longer sold, the goal is the closest match, and some difference is normal because the old shingles have weathered.
Does Patriot install new 3-tab roofs?
No. We repair existing 3-tab roofs and replace worn ones with architectural or impact-rated shingles, which stand up better to Arkansas wind and hail.
