GAF Timberline HDZ Colors: All 23 Shades and How to Choose
GAF shows 23 colors for its Timberline HDZ shingle on its color guide: Barkwood, Biscayne Blue, Birchwood, Charcoal, Chestnut Valley, Cliffside, Copper Canyon, Driftwood, Fox Hollow Gray, Golden Amber, Hickory, Hunter Green, Midnight Mesa, Mission Brown, Oyster Gray, Patriot Red, Pewter Gray, Shakewood, Sierra Sand, Slate, Sunset Brick, Weathered Wood and Williamsburg Slate. Not every color is stocked everywhere, so the short list you can actually order depends on your area and your supplier. Below is the full list, how GAF groups the colors, what changed in 2026, and how to pick one for an Arkansas home.
We are Patriot Roofing and Restoration in Maumelle. Atlas is our primary shingle line, but we install GAF and just about any other brand on request, for example to match an HOA rule, an existing roof section or a brand you prefer. Every GAF fact below comes from GAF's own website, checked on November 1, 2026.
The High Definition colors (the classics)
On its Timberline HDZ product page, GAF lists five colors in its High Definition collection:
- Weathered Wood
- Charcoal
- Pewter Gray
- Barkwood
- Shakewood
GAF says more of its customers have chosen Weathered Wood than any other shingle color. GAF also says these popular colors are offered on Timberline HDZ, Timberline UHDZ and Timberline AS II, which helps if you are matching a newer section of roof to an older GAF roof.
The Bold Definition colors (new in 2026)
GAF introduced its Bold Definition collection for Timberline HDZ in January 2026 with four new colors:
- Chestnut Valley
- Cliffside
- Midnight Mesa
- Sierra Sand
GAF marks Bold Definition as US only and describes it as an upgrade to its older American Harvest and Harvest Blend palettes. If you were shown a Harvest Blend color a few years ago and cannot find it now, GAF says only limited inventory of Harvest Blend may remain and points buyers to Bold Definition instead.
Every other Timberline HDZ color on GAF's color guide
GAF's shingle color guide shows these as Timberline HDZ colors as well:
- Biscayne Blue
- Birchwood
- Copper Canyon
- Driftwood
- Fox Hollow Gray
- Golden Amber
- Hickory
- Hunter Green
- Mission Brown
- Oyster Gray
- Patriot Red
- Slate
- Sunset Brick
- Williamsburg Slate
Some of these are regional colors. GAF's guide refers to a map of popular colors by region, and its product page asks you to get real samples from your contractor because screens show color differently. Before you fall in love with a color, ask your roofer to confirm it is in stock in Central Arkansas.
What GAF says about the shingle itself
Color is only part of the decision. Here is what GAF publishes about Timberline HDZ:
- Impact rating: GAF says it passes the UL 2218 impact test with a Class 3 rating, and that only shingles sold in packages bearing the UL 2218 Class 3 statement are rated for Class 3.
- Fire rating: UL listed to ANSI/UL 790 Class A.
- Nailing: GAF's LayerLock Technology and StrikeZone nailing area, which GAF says provides up to 99.9% nailing accuracy.
- Wind: a 15-year WindProven Limited Wind Warranty with no wind speed limit, which GAF says requires four GAF accessories to be installed with the shingles.
- Algae: a 25-year StainGuard Plus Algae Protection Limited Warranty on packages bearing the StainGuard Plus logo.
- Shingle warranty: a Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects, where GAF defines lifetime as the time the original owners own a single-family home.
- Size: GAF lists 13-1/4 by 39-3/8 inches, a 5-5/8 inch exposure, 64 pieces and 3 bundles per square.
Two of those points matter more in Central Arkansas than in many places. First, hail: Class 3 is a step below Class 4, the highest UL 2218 rating, and Class 4 shingles may qualify you for a homeowners insurance discount depending on your insurer. Second, humidity: the black streaks on older Arkansas roofs are algae, so the algae warranty is worth reading. Our impact-resistant shingle guide explains the classes.
How Timberline HDZ compares with the Atlas lines we lead with
We recommend Atlas for two reasons. Atlas factory-applies 3M Scotchgard Protector to the lines we install, and Atlas lists lifetime algae coverage on its Pinnacle and StormMaster Shake lines. And because we are an Atlas PRO+ contractor at the Gold level installing full Atlas Signature Select systems, an Atlas roof we register can carry Atlas's extended system warranty covering materials and labor together. If you need Class 4 hail resistance, Atlas Pinnacle Impact and StormMaster Shake are Class 4; Pinnacle Impact is the shingle in our Guardian package.
If you want GAF, we will install GAF. We do not hold a GAF certification, so a GAF roof from us carries GAF's standard shingle warranty plus our own written guarantees, not a GAF enhanced system warranty. On a roof replacement that includes the Patriot Leak Free Guarantee for your package term, for example the 10-year Patriot Leak Free Guarantee on Guardian. See our Atlas shingle colors post to compare palettes side by side.
How to choose a Timberline HDZ color
- Start with what stays. Brick, stone and siding are not changing. Hold real shingle samples against them in daylight.
- Look at a whole roof. A full roof reads darker or lighter than a single swatch. If a neighbor has a roof you like, ask what color it is.
- Think about the sun. Darker roofs soak up more heat. On a long south- or west-facing slope in an Arkansas summer, good attic ventilation matters even more.
- Check your HOA first. Many neighborhoods approve roof colors. Get approval before anything is ordered.
- Plan for repairs. A widely stocked color is easier to match if a few shingles ever need replacing.
Our step-by-step guide to choosing a shingle color walks through pairings by home style.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular GAF Timberline HDZ color?
GAF says Weathered Wood. Charcoal, Pewter Gray, Barkwood and Shakewood round out the High Definition colors GAF features on its product page.
Are all 23 colors available in Arkansas?
Not necessarily. Some colors are regional and the Bold Definition colors are US only. Ask your roofer to check stock with the local supplier before you decide.
Is Timberline HDZ impact resistant?
GAF rates it Class 3 under UL 2218 on packages that carry the Class 3 statement. Class 4 is the top rating. If hail is your main worry, compare Class 4 shingles before you pick a color.
Does Patriot install GAF Timberline HDZ?
Yes, on request. Atlas is our primary line, and we will show you both so you can compare. Learn more on our asphalt shingle roofing page.
