Are GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles Good? An Honest Review
Yes. GAF Timberline HDZ is a good, mainstream architectural shingle. GAF calls it its #1-selling shingle, rates it Class A for fire and Class 3 for impact, and backs it with a Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects. It is not the strongest shingle you can put on a Central Arkansas roof against hail, though, because Class 3 is one step below the top Class 4 rating, and some of its best warranty coverage depends on how the roof is installed. Here is an honest look at what it does well, where it falls short, and who it fits.
We are Patriot Roofing and Restoration in Maumelle. Atlas is our primary shingle line, and we install GAF and just about any other brand on request, for example to match an HOA rule or an existing section of roof. Every GAF fact below comes from GAF's own Timberline HDZ product page, checked on November 3, 2026.
What GAF says Timberline HDZ does well
- Nailing accuracy. GAF's LayerLock Technology and StrikeZone nailing area are meant to make nails land in the right spot. GAF says StrikeZone is the industry's widest nailing area and claims up to 99.9% nailing accuracy, based on a lab test in which a roofer placed 999 of 1,000 nails correctly. GAF notes actual results may vary.
- Wind. GAF lists ASTM D7158 Class H and ASTM D3161 Class F wind ratings, plus a 15-year WindProven Limited Wind Warranty that GAF says has no wind speed limit.
- Fire. UL listed to ANSI/UL 790 Class A, the highest fire rating for roof coverings.
- Algae. A 25-year StainGuard Plus Algae Protection Limited Warranty against blue-green algae streaks, on packages that carry the StainGuard Plus logo.
- Popularity. GAF calls it its most popular shingle. That matters for one practical reason: a widely used shingle is usually easier to find years later if a few need replacing.
Where it falls short for Central Arkansas homes
Class 3, not Class 4, for hail
GAF says Timberline HDZ passes UL 2218 Class 3 impact testing, and only on packages that carry the Class 3 statement. Class 4 is the highest UL 2218 rating. In a part of the country where spring hail is a regular event, that gap is worth weighing. Class 4 shingles may qualify for a homeowners insurance discount; discounts vary by insurer, so ask your agent before you choose. GAF itself is careful here: its page says GAF makes no hail performance warranty and that hail damage is not covered under its limited warranty, and that any insurance discount is not guaranteed. Our impact-resistant shingle guide explains the classes in plain terms.
The wind warranty has conditions
The no-limit WindProven warranty is real, but GAF says it applies only when the shingles are installed with at least four required GAF accessories: GAF starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge cap shingles, and a leak barrier or attic ventilation. A roof without them falls back to GAF's standard shingle and accessory warranty. If WindProven is part of why you want GAF, ask your roofer in writing which GAF accessories are in the quote.
"Lifetime" means the owner, not the roof
GAF defines lifetime coverage as the time the original individual owner (or an eligible second owner) owns the single-family detached home where the shingles are installed. That is how most shingle makers use the word, Atlas included. It does not mean the roof lasts forever. In Arkansas heat and storms, we tell homeowners to plan on 15 to 20 years from an asphalt shingle roof, because manufacturer ratings assume milder climates.
The specs at a glance
GAF lists these nominal figures for Timberline HDZ:
- Size: 13-1/4 by 39-3/8 inches
- Exposure: 5-5/8 inches
- Pieces per square: 64
- Bundles per square: 3
- Nails per square: 256
GAF offers the shingle in its High Definition colors, the newer Bold Definition colors (US only) and a set of cool-roof rated colors. We cover every shade in our GAF Timberline HDZ colors post, so we will not repeat the list here.
Who Timberline HDZ fits
- Homes that need to match GAF. If part of your roof is already GAF, or your HOA names a GAF color, staying with Timberline HDZ keeps the look consistent.
- Owners who want a familiar name. It is a widely sold architectural shingle with a long track record and published test data.
- Roofs where hail is not the main worry. If impact resistance is high on your list, compare it with a Class 4 shingle before you decide.
How it compares with the Atlas lines we lead with
We recommend Atlas, and we are open about why. First, 3M Scotchgard Protector is factory applied to the Atlas lines we install, and Atlas covers algae streaking for the lifetime of its warranty on its Pinnacle and StormMaster Shake lines. In a humid state where black streaks show up on older roofs, that is a real difference from a 25-year algae term. Second, because we are an Atlas PRO+ contractor at the Gold level installing full Atlas Signature Select systems, an Atlas roof we install and register can carry Atlas's extended system warranty covering materials and labor together. For Pinnacle Impact, that premium protection period is 15 years.
If hail is your concern, Atlas Pinnacle Impact and StormMaster Shake are Class 4. Pinnacle Impact is the shingle in our Guardian package, which comes with a 10-year Patriot Leak Free Guarantee. See our Atlas shingle colors post to compare the palettes.
If you still want Timberline HDZ, we will install it. We do not hold a GAF certification, so a GAF roof from us carries GAF's standard warranty plus our own written guarantees, not a GAF enhanced system warranty. On a roof replacement, our written guarantees include the Patriot Leak Free Guarantee for your package term, the No-Blame-Game Guarantee, the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and the Apples-to-Apples Guarantee. Learn how each package is built on our asphalt shingle roofing page.
Questions to ask before you sign for any shingle
- What is the shingle's UL 2218 impact class, printed on the package?
- Which accessories are in the quote, and do they qualify for the maker's best wind warranty?
- Is the warranty shingle-only, or does it cover labor too?
- Does the roofer guarantee the roof will not leak, or only "workmanship"?
- Will I get a written inspection report with photos, and photos of the finished job?

Frequently asked questions
Are GAF Timberline HDZ shingles impact resistant?
GAF rates them Class 3 under UL 2218, on packages that carry the Class 3 statement. Class 4 is the top rating. GAF says hail damage is not covered under its limited warranty.
How long do Timberline HDZ shingles last in Arkansas?
GAF's Lifetime Limited Warranty covers manufacturing defects for as long as the original owner owns the home; it is not a lifespan promise. For any asphalt shingle in Arkansas, we tell homeowners to plan on about 15 to 20 years.
Is Timberline HDZ better than Atlas?
Both are well-known architectural shingles. We lead with Atlas because of factory-applied 3M Scotchgard Protector, Class 4 options and the Atlas system warranty we can register as an Atlas PRO+ contractor at the Gold level. If you prefer GAF, we will price both side by side.
Does Patriot install GAF Timberline HDZ?
Yes, on request. Atlas is our primary line, and we do not claim any GAF certification or GAF system warranty.
