Can a Roofer Help With an Insurance Claim? What They Can and Cannot Do
Yes, a roofer can help with a roof insurance claim, but only in certain ways. A good roofer inspects and documents the damage, meets your insurance company's adjuster at the house to point out what was found, and then does the work to the scope you approve. A roofer cannot decide your claim, cannot negotiate it for you like a lawyer or a public adjuster, and should never offer to cover or waive your deductible. Here is how Patriot Roofing and Restoration works with homeowners and their insurance companies in Central Arkansas.
What a roofer can do on a claim
- Inspect and document. Our storm damage inspections are free and come with a 21-point report and photos of every damaged area, inside and out. Most hail hits cannot be seen from the ground.
- Stop the water first. If water is coming in, we tarp the roof and make temporary repairs. Keep the receipt for your insurance company.
- Meet the adjuster. A Patriot Roofing and Restoration team member meets the adjuster at your home and points out the damage we found so the adjuster sees what we see. We do not argue with the adjuster. In our experience, having a Patriot team member there working with the adjuster increases the chances that the claim is paid in full, but the coverage decision is always your insurance company's.
- Do the work. The repair or replacement is done to the scope you approve, with written guarantees on every roof we install.
What a roofer cannot do
- Decide coverage. Your policy, your carrier and the damage found decide what is paid.
- Waive or cover your deductible. Your deductible is part of your policy and it is yours to pay. A reputable roofer will not offer to cover, waive or rebate it, including through "free" upgrades. Patriot follows Arkansas HB 1308 (2025) on deductibles. Financing can help you pay your own deductible.
- Send false information. What your insurer is told about the work and what you paid must match what actually happened. Arkansas Code 23-66-501 to 513 covers fraudulent insurance acts. We send the insurer a certificate of completion when the work is done.
The order of events
- Call as soon as it is safe. Most policies require prompt notice of damage, and fresh hail damage is easier to document.
- Get the roof inspected. Book a free storm damage inspection. You see the photos and decide whether to file.
- File the claim with your insurer. Your insurance company assigns an adjuster.
- Adjuster visit. We can be there to point out the damage.
- Decision and scope. Your insurer decides what is covered. You approve the work.
- Repair or replace. Then we send the certificate of completion.

Watch out for storm chasers
Be careful with anyone who knocks unannounced right after a storm, has out-of-state plates, pushes you to sign that day or offers to cover your deductible. Ask for an Arkansas license number and a local address. More in our guide to storm chasing roofing scams in Arkansas.
Frequently asked questions
Should I call my roofer or my insurance company first?
If water is coming in, stop the water first and keep the receipts. Otherwise, a free roof inspection first tells you whether there is damage worth a claim before you file.
Will my insurance pay for a new roof?
It depends on your policy, your carrier and the damage found. We document the damage and can meet your adjuster, but coverage decisions are made by your insurance company.
Is storm damage always a full replacement?
No. Some storms damage only a few shingles, a vent or a run of gutter, and a repair is enough. When damage is spread across the roof, replacement is usually the better choice. We show you the photos and you decide.
