What Is the Best Time of Year to Replace a Roof in Arkansas?

Roofers laying new synthetic underlayment and shingles on a home in Conway

In Central Arkansas, fall is usually the best time of year to replace a roof. From mid-September through November, Little Rock averages highs in the 60s and 70s, warm enough for new shingles to seal down and cool enough for crews to work steadily, and you finish with a tight roof before winter.

Spring is a close second, but it is also the heart of storm season, when roofers are busiest and weather delays are most common. Winter and summer both work too, with a few precautions. Here is how each season really plays out in Maumelle, Little Rock, Conway and the rest of Central Arkansas, and when you should not wait for any season at all.

Quick Answer: Roof Replacement Season by Season

MonthsHow it ratesWhy
September to NovemberBestMild temperatures, good sealing weather, and the roof is done before winter.
March to MayGood, with delaysComfortable temperatures, but the wettest stretch of the year and peak storm season.
June to AugustWorkableShingles seal fast, but heat slows crews and soft shingles scuff more easily.
December to FebruaryWorkable on mild, dry daysShingles seal slowly in the cold and short days limit work hours.

What the Weather Data Says About Little Rock

The National Weather Service publishes 30-year climate normals for Little Rock (Adams Field, 1991 to 2020). Averaged by month, they show why fall stands out:

MonthAverage highAverage lowAverage rainfall
September85°F63°F3.0 in
October74°F51°F4.5 in
November62°F40°F4.7 in
December53°F33°F5.1 in
January51°F31°F3.5 in
February55°F34°F4.0 in
March64°F42°F5.0 in
April73°F50°F5.6 in
May81°F59°F5.1 in

September is the driest month in the table, and October afternoons in the mid 70s are close to ideal for roofing. April is the wettest month in the table, and rain is the most common reason a roof replacement gets pushed back a day or two.

Why Temperature Matters for New Shingles

Asphalt shingles are held down by nails and by a strip of sealant that bonds each shingle to the one below it. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association explains that most shingles use a thermally activated sealant, and that how fast it seals depends on the roof's slope, which way it faces, and how much sun and heat it gets.

That is the whole case for fall in one sentence: there is still enough warm sun to seal the shingles, without the brutal heat of July. A roof installed in October normally has weeks of sunny afternoons to seal before the coldest weather arrives.

In true cold weather, ARMA recommends storing shingles indoors to keep them warm, handling bundles gently because cold shingles crack more easily, and hand-sealing shingles with an approved adhesive where better wind resistance is needed, always following the manufacturer's instructions. If you replace your roof in winter, ask your roofer how they handle each of those.

Fall Is Not Storm Free in Arkansas

Fall is the best window, but it is not a quiet one. National Weather Service Little Rock notes that Arkansas typically gets a second severe weather season in the fall or early winter, about two years out of every three. Of the 891 tornadoes recorded in Arkansas from 2000 to 2022, 339, or 38%, happened between September and February. And 2025 was busier than usual: NWS Little Rock counted 60 tornadoes in Arkansas, against a 30-year average of about 37 a year.

That is one more reason to get an aging roof replaced in early fall rather than late fall. A roof that is already worn, curling or missing granules is the one most likely to fail in a November wind storm. If you are not sure where your roof stands, our guide to inspecting your roof in a storm-prone climate covers what to look for from the ground.

Spring: Good Weather, Busy Season

March through May brings comfortable working temperatures, but it also brings the most rain and the most hail. When a big hail storm hits Little Rock, Benton or Sherwood, hundreds of homeowners call roofers in the same week, and out-of-state storm chasers follow the storm in. If you replace in spring, take your time choosing a contractor. Our post on how to spot storm-chasing roofers in Arkansas is worth five minutes before you sign anything.

Summer: Fast Sealing, Hard Work

Shingles seal quickly in July heat, so summer roofs are sound roofs. The challenge is the crew and the material. Roof surfaces get far hotter than the air, so good crews start at first light and finish the hardest work before mid-afternoon, and they are careful walking on softened shingles so they do not scuff the granules.

Winter: Fine on the Right Days

Central Arkansas winters are short and mild compared to most of the country. With a normal January high near 51°F, there are plenty of dry days to work. Winter is also often a slower season for roofers, which can make scheduling easier. Just expect a crew to skip frozen or wet mornings and to take the cold-weather steps above. Ice dams are rare here, but they do happen; our ice dam guide explains why ventilation matters.

When You Should Not Wait for the Right Season

Everything above assumes you have a choice. If your roof is leaking, missing shingles, or was just hit by hail or wind, the best time is now. Water that gets past the shingles soaks decking, insulation and drywall, and the bill grows every time it rains.

Do You Need a Permit? It Depends on Your Town

Permits can add a few days to a schedule, so it helps to know where they apply. Of the towns we serve, only Hot Springs, Maumelle and Cabot require a roofing permit for a roof replacement. Little Rock, North Little Rock, Conway, Benton, Bryant and the rest of our service area do not. If you live in one of the three permit towns, ask your roofer to confirm the permit is in place before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace a roof in winter in Arkansas?

Yes. Central Arkansas winters are mild enough that roofs are replaced on dry days most weeks. Little Rock's normal January high is about 51°F. The trade-off is that shingle sealant bonds slowly in the cold, so a good crew stores shingles warm, avoids frozen mornings and hand-seals shingles where the manufacturer calls for it.

Is summer a bad time to replace a roof in Arkansas?

No, but it is the hardest season on the crew and the shingles. Roof surfaces get much hotter than the air on a sunny July afternoon, so good crews start at first light and finish the hottest work early. Soft shingles scuff more easily in high heat, which is why careful handling matters more in July than in October.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Central Arkansas?

Of the towns Patriot Roofing and Restoration serves, only Hot Springs, Maumelle and Cabot require a roofing permit for a roof replacement. Every other town on our service list does not.

Should I wait for fall if my roof is leaking now?

No. Season only matters when you have a choice. An active leak or fresh storm damage should be handled right away, with emergency tarping if needed, because water damage to decking, insulation and ceilings grows every time it rains.

Is fall really the best time to replace a roof in Arkansas?

For most homeowners, yes. October and November bring mild temperatures, less heat stress on crews and materials, and enough warm sun for shingles to seal before winter. Arkansas does have a second storm season in fall, so it is not storm free, but it is usually the most predictable window to plan around.
