Best Shingle Colors: How to Pick One for Your Home

A white board-and-batten home with a dark shingle roof and a covered front porch with rocking chairs, on a hilltop lot in Mayflower

The best shingle color is the one that is a shade darker than your siding, works with the brick or stone you already have, and suits the shape of your house. For most Central Arkansas homes that means a medium gray, a weathered wood blend or a medium brown. Atlas, our primary shingle maker, gives three rules of thumb: the shingle should be darker than the siding, a ranch home is best topped with a medium color, and darker colors belong on multi-story homes. Atlas also says lighter colors may be more energy efficient in hot climates, which matters in an Arkansas summer. Below is how to apply those rules to your home, with real color names from Atlas, Owens Corning and CertainTeed so you know what to ask for.

We are Patriot Roofing and Restoration in Maumelle. Atlas is our primary shingle line, and we install other brands on request, for example to match an HOA rule or an existing roof section. Every product fact below comes from the manufacturer's own website: Atlas pages checked November 5, 2026, the Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration page and the CertainTeed Landmark page, both checked October 31, 2026. Color availability changes by region, so confirm your color with your roofer before you settle on it.

There is no single best color, but there are safe bets

No manufacturer publishes a ranking of its best-selling colors, so be wary of any list that claims one. What you can see is which color families every maker offers in almost every line, because those are the ones that suit the most homes. Across the three brands, those families are:

  • Medium and dark grays: Atlas Pewter and Weathered Shadow; Owens Corning Estate Gray, Sierra Gray and Williamsburg Gray; CertainTeed Georgetown Gray, Pewter and Thunderstorm Gray.
  • Weathered wood blends (gray and brown mixed): Atlas Weathered Wood; Owens Corning Driftwood; CertainTeed Weathered Wood and Driftwood.
  • Browns: Atlas Hearthstone, Morning Harvest and Tan Mist; Owens Corning Brownwood and Teak; CertainTeed Burnt Sienna, Mojave Tan and Resawn Shake.
  • Blacks and charcoals: Atlas Black Shadow; Owens Corning Onyx Black; CertainTeed Moire Black and Charcoal Black.

The grouping is ours, not the manufacturers'. Two colors with similar names can look quite different on a roof, so treat these as a starting short list, not a match chart.

Pick by your siding and brick

Your roof is the one part of the exterior you are changing. Brick, stone and most siding stay, so start with them.

Plain siding in one color

Atlas suggests a blended shade on a home with plain siding and names Majestic Shake as an example. A blend gives the roof some depth when the walls are a single flat color. On white or light gray siding, a medium or dark gray blend reads crisp. On tan, cream or beige siding, a weathered wood or brown blend keeps the house warm in tone.

Multicolor brick or stone

Atlas recommends a solid color shingle for a varied exterior like multicolor brick or stone. Brick already brings a lot of color, and a busy roof on top of busy brick can look cluttered. A steady gray, charcoal or brown lets the masonry stand out. Hold samples against the brick itself, not against the mortar.

Red or orange brick

Warm brick usually sits best under warm or neutral roofs: browns, weathered wood blends or a charcoal that leans warm. Very cool blue-grays can fight with orange brick. This is general design guidance, not a manufacturer rule, so look at real samples in daylight before you decide.

Dark siding

Atlas's rule is that the shingle should be darker than the siding, and it gives a light gray roof over barn red siding as an example that does not work. If your siding is dark navy, deep green or dark red, a black or charcoal roof keeps the roof as the darkest part of the house.

Pick by the shape of your house

Atlas says ranch homes are best topped with a medium color shingle, and that dark colors belong on multi-story homes because they draw attention to themselves. The reason is how much roof you see. On a one-story ranch, the roof is a big share of what people see from the street, so a very dark or very bold color can overwhelm the house. On a two-story home, the roof is smaller in the view and higher up, so a darker color frames the house without taking it over.

Roof shape matters too. A simple gable roof shows color evenly. A hip roof with many slopes, dormers and valleys catches light at different angles, so look at samples on more than one side of the house.

Arkansas heat, humidity and storms

Heat. Atlas says lighter colors may be more reflective and energy efficient in hot climates, and that homes in warmer climates are better served with lighter shingles. That does not mean you need a white roof. It means that if you are torn between two colors, the lighter one will usually soak up less sun. Atlas also makes Pinnacle Sun, a line with reflective "cool" granules; see our Atlas shingle colors post for the colors and their published reflectance numbers. Good attic ventilation does more for attic heat than color alone; see attic ventilation.

Humidity and algae. The black streaks on older Arkansas roofs are algae. The answer is a shingle that resists algae in the first place: the Atlas lines we install carry 3M Scotchgard Protector, factory applied, to fight those streaks.

Hail. Color has nothing to do with hail resistance; the impact rating does. Atlas Pinnacle Impact is Class 4 under UL 2218, the highest rating for asphalt shingles, and comes in six colors: Black Shadow IR, Hearthstone IR, Morning Harvest IR, Pewter IR, Rustic Highland IR and Weathered Wood IR. It is the shingle in our Guardian package. A Class 4 shingle may qualify you for a homeowners insurance discount; discounts vary by insurer, so ask your agent. More in our impact-resistant shingle guide.

Color names by brand

If you want to see each palette in full:

  • Atlas Pinnacle Pristine (Class 3) has the widest Atlas palette. Atlas's product page showed 19 colors on November 5, 2026, including Black Shadow, Coastal Granite, Hearthstone, Majestic Shake, Morning Harvest, Oyster Shell, Pewter, Summer Storm, Sunset, Tan Mist, Weathered Shadow, Weathered Wood and Woodland Green. Atlas says to enter your zip code for the colors in your region and to check with a distributor for availability. All Atlas lines are in our Atlas shingle colors post.
  • Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration (Class 3) showed 16 colors for a Little Rock zip code. They are listed in our Owens Corning shingle colors post.
  • CertainTeed Landmark (Class 3) lists 21 colors, including Charcoal Black, Cobblestone Gray, Colonial Slate, Driftwood, Georgetown Gray, Heather Blend, Moire Black, Pewter, Resawn Shake, Thunderstorm Gray and Weathered Wood.

We lead with Atlas for two reasons: the 3M Scotchgard Protector on the lines we install, and the warranty. As an Atlas PRO+ contractor at the Gold level installing full Atlas Signature Select systems, an Atlas roof we register can carry Atlas's extended system warranty covering materials and labor together. If you want Owens Corning or CertainTeed, we will install it, but we hold no certification or preferred status with either, so that roof carries the maker's standard shingle warranty plus our own written guarantees.

How to make the final call

  • Look at full-size shingles outside. Atlas says final color selections should be made using full-size shingles, and that sample boards and photos are a guideline only. Look in morning and afternoon light.
  • Drive by real roofs. A whole roof looks different from one shingle. When a neighbor's roof catches your eye, ask what it is.
  • Fit the street. Atlas suggests staying consistent with the roofs around you rather than picking a color that stands far apart.
  • Check your HOA first. Many neighborhoods approve roof colors. Get it in writing before you order.
  • Try a visualizer. Atlas offers an online design studio where you can upload a photo of your house and try colors on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular shingle color?

Manufacturers do not publish sales by color. The families offered in nearly every line, grays, weathered wood blends, browns and black, are the ones that suit the most homes.

Is a dark or light roof better in Arkansas?

Atlas says lighter colors may be more energy efficient in hot climates, and darker colors tend to suit multi-story homes. A medium gray or weathered wood blend is a common middle ground. Ventilation matters more for attic heat than color.

Should the roof be lighter or darker than the siding?

Darker. Atlas's rule of thumb is that the shingle should be a darker shade than the siding.

Does shingle color affect the warranty?

No. Warranty terms depend on the shingle line and how the system is installed and registered, not on the color.

Can I choose a color from a photo?

Use photos and online visualizers to narrow it down, but Atlas says final color selections should be made using full-size shingles, because sample boards and photos are a guideline only.
