Soffit and fascia are the two boards that finish the edge of your roof. They are easy to overlook, but they protect the roof deck, hold up your gutters and help your attic breathe.
What a fascia board does
The fascia is the board that runs along the roof edge, facing out. Your gutters are fastened to it. It also covers the ends of the rafters and closes the roof edge to weather and animals.
What soffit and soffit vents do
The soffit is the panel under the roof overhang, between the fascia and the wall. Vented soffit lets fresh air into the attic, which works with the ridge vents to carry heat and moisture out.
Signs soffit and fascia need work
- Peeling paint, dark stains or soft spots on the fascia.
- Gutters pulling away from the house.
- Sagging, split or missing soffit panels.
- Birds, squirrels or wasps getting into the overhang.
- A hot, stuffy attic, which can mean the soffit vents are blocked.
Water is the usual cause. Overflowing gutters and a missing drip edge send water onto the fascia, and it rots from behind.

Only if it is damaged. New gutters need solid fascia to hold their hangers, so we check it when the old gutters come off.
