Rolled Roofing: Why We Do Not Use It on Homes

Rolled roofing is asphalt roofing material sold in long rolls instead of individual shingles. It goes down in wide strips that overlap. It is quick to install and low in cost, so people ask about it when they price a roof.

Where rolled roofing fits

Rolled roofing shows up most on sheds, barns, workshops and other outbuildings, and on some low-slope sections where looks matter less. On those buildings, a fast, simple cover can make sense.

Why we do not put it on homes

• Fewer layers. Shingles overlap in several layers. Rolled roofing is usually a single layer with long seams, so one failed seam can let water in.
• Less storm resistance. Central Arkansas sees hail and high wind. Our shingle packages include Class 3 and Class 4 impact-rated options, and our metal package is rated for hail up to 2 inches.
