Ridge Vents and Attic Ventilation in Arkansas Heat

New dark shingles and turbine vents on a replaced roof in Hot Springs

Your attic needs to breathe. Air should come in low, at the eaves, and leave high, at the top of the roof. That steady flow carries heat and moisture out of the attic before they can cause trouble. A ridge vent is the most common way to let that air out on a shingle roof.

What a ridge vent is

A ridge vent runs along the peak of the roof. The crew cuts a slot in the roof deck at the ridge, lays a vent over it, and covers the vent with ridge cap shingles. From the street it looks like a normal ridge line. Underneath, warm attic air can rise and escape along the whole length of the peak.

Types of roof vents

  • Ridge vents: exhaust along the peak, covered by ridge cap.
  • Soffit vents: intake under the eaves, where fresh air comes in.
  • Turbine vents (whirlybirds): exhaust vents that spin in the wind.
  • Static box vents: low, square exhaust vents near the top of the roof.
  • Gable vents: louvered vents in the gable walls.
  • Powered and solar attic fans: fans that pull air out of the attic.

Why intake matters as much as exhaust

A ridge vent only works if air can get in at the bottom. That is the job of intake vents, usually in the soffit under the eaves. When intake and exhaust are balanced, air moves through the whole attic. When intake is blocked, by insulation or painted-over soffit vents, the ridge vent has little to pull from.

Mixing exhaust types can also cause problems. A ridge vent next to a powered fan or a gable vent can pull air in the wrong direction, so the far end of the attic never gets fresh air. We look at the whole system, not one vent.

Why ventilation matters in Arkansas

Arkansas summers are hot and humid. A poorly vented attic holds that heat against the underside of the roof deck and the shingles. It also traps moisture, which can show up as damp insulation, rusty nails or a musty smell. Good airflow helps the roof and the attic stay drier and cooler.

Signs your attic is not venting well

  • An attic that feels much hotter than outdoors on a summer afternoon.
  • Damp or matted insulation.
  • Rusty nail tips poking through the roof deck.
  • A musty smell or dark staining on the underside of the decking.
  • Soffit vents covered by paint or blocked by insulation.

Ventilation in each Patriot roof package

  • Armor (metal): balanced metal-compatible ventilation.
  • Guardian and Defender: balanced ridge and intake ventilation.
  • Shield: whirlybird ventilation.

See what else comes in each package on our roof replacement and roof prices pages. If you need more exhaust without a new roof, our roof repair price book lists a solar attic fan at $1,833 on a standard-pitch, one-story home.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a ridge vent to my current roof?

Often, yes, but it is easiest during a replacement, when the ridge is open and the intake can be checked at the same time.

Is more ventilation always better?

No. Balance matters more than the number of vents. Too much exhaust with too little intake does not move air well.
