Ice and Water Shield: Where It Goes on an Arkansas Roof
Ice and water shield is a sticky, rubberized membrane that goes on the roof deck under the shingles. It is different from regular underlayment because it seals itself around every nail driven through it. That makes it the best protection in the spots where water is most likely to get in.
Why it matters in Arkansas
The name comes from colder states, where ice builds up at the roof edge. Central Arkansas does not see much of that, but it does see heavy rain, wind-driven storms and the occasional ice storm. In those conditions, water gets pushed sideways and backward under shingles. Ice and water shield is the layer that stops it at the deck.
Where it goes
- Valleys: where two slopes meet and the most water flows.
- Penetrations: around pipes, vents, chimneys and skylights.
- Eaves: along the lower edge, where water backs up when gutters overflow.
- The whole roof: on low-slope sections or metal roofs that call for it.

Ice and water shield in each Patriot package
- Armor (metal roof): full high-temp ice and water shield.
- Guardian: at the eaves, valleys and penetrations.

The rest of the deck gets synthetic underlayment. Compare the packages side by side on our roof prices page.
Frequently asked questions
Is ice and water shield the same as underlayment?
No. Regular synthetic underlayment covers the whole deck and sheds water. Ice and water shield is a self-adhering membrane used in the high-risk spots, because it seals around nails.
Can it be added without a new roof?
Not really. It goes on the bare deck, so it is installed during a roof replacement or when a section like a valley is rebuilt.
Does more ice and water shield mean a better roof?
More coverage adds protection, but the installation matters most. It has to be lapped correctly and paired with good flashing and ventilation.
