How Many Bundles of Shingles per Square? (And How to Figure Yours)

Roofers laying new synthetic underlayment and shingles on a home in Conway

Most architectural shingles take 3 bundles to cover one roofing square, and a square is 100 square feet of roof. So a bundle covers about 33 square feet. A roof that measures 25 squares needs about 75 bundles of field shingles, plus extra for waste, starter shingles along the edges and hip and ridge caps on top. Below is where the 3-bundle number comes from, how to check it for the shingle you pick, and what else goes on the order.

What a roofing square is

Roofers measure in squares, not square feet. One square is a 10 by 10 foot area, or 100 square feet of roof surface. Roof area is bigger than your home's floor area because the roof is sloped and hangs past the walls, so a 2,000 square foot house usually has well over 20 squares of roof. Steeper roofs have more surface over the same footprint; our post on roof pitch explains why.

Why most architectural shingles are 3 bundles per square

It comes down to the size of each shingle and how much of it shows. Atlas, our primary shingle line, lists its Pinnacle Impact, Pinnacle Pristine and ProLam shingles at 42 inches long by 14 inches wide with a 6 inch exposure, packed 18 to 20 shingles per bundle (Atlas product data sheets, checked November 1, 2026). Atlas lists StormMaster Shake at the same 14 by 42 inch size with a 6 inch exposure.

The exposure is the part of each shingle you see once the next row covers the rest. Here is the math:

  • Each shingle covers 42 inches by 6 inches of roof, which is 252 square inches, or 1.75 square feet.
  • A square of 100 square feet takes about 57 shingles (100 divided by 1.75).
  • At 18 to 20 shingles a bundle, that is just about 3 bundles.

Atlas does not print a bundles-per-square figure on those data sheets, so the 3-bundle number above is our arithmetic from Atlas's published sizes. It matches what we see on real jobs, and our own repair price book plans on one bundle covering roughly 33 square feet.

When it is not 3 bundles

Not every shingle packs the same way. Some thicker and heavier shingles, such as certain designer and shake-look lines, come 4 or more bundles to the square because each bundle can only hold so much weight. The bundle count is printed on the wrapper and on the maker's data sheet. If you are pricing a shingle yourself, read the wrapper or the data sheet rather than assuming 3.

The other exception is the shingles that do a special job:

  • Starter shingles go along the eaves and rakes under the first row, and they are sold by the linear foot, not by the square. See what starter shingles do.
  • Hip and ridge caps run along the peaks and are also counted by the foot. Atlas lists its Pro-Cut Hip and Ridge at 31 linear feet per package (66 pieces, 12 by 12 inches, 5-5/8 inch exposure, checked November 1, 2026). When we plan a job we figure 25 linear feet a bundle, which leaves a cushion for cuts. More in ridge cap shingles explained.

How to figure how many bundles you need

  1. Get the roof area in squares. The most reliable number comes from a measurement report made from aerial images. Every Patriot replacement includes one.
  2. Multiply by 3 (or by the bundle count on the wrapper of the shingle you chose). This is your field shingle count with no waste.
  3. Add waste. Shingles get cut at every valley, hip, rake edge, dormer, chimney and vent. A simple gable roof wastes little; a cut-up roof with many valleys and dormers wastes a lot more. Measurement reports show the waste allowance for your roof's shape.
  4. Add starter and hip and ridge separately, by the linear foot.
  5. Round up. You cannot buy part of a bundle, and running short in the middle of a job means a second delivery and maybe a different batch of color.

Example: a 25-square roof of a normal shape. 25 times 3 is 75 bundles of field shingles before waste. Add waste for the valleys and cuts, then add starter for the edges and hip and ridge for the peaks, and the order lands well above 75. That is why two roofs with the same square footage on paper can need very different orders.

What a bundle weighs and why it matters

Bundles are heavy, and the weight is printed on the wrapper. Crews carry them up a ladder or have them delivered straight onto the roof, spread across the slope so the weight is not piled in one spot. If you are storing bundles, keep them flat and dry. A bundle left bent over a ridge or out in the sun for days can deform and not lie flat when it is installed.

Do you need to count bundles at all?

Only if you are doing the work yourself or checking a quote. On a Patriot roof replacement, the shingles, hip and ridge, starter, underlayment, flashing and everything else on the list are included in the package price, measured from the report, and delivered for you. The full list is on our roof replacement page. For a quick price on your own home, try the roof cost calculator; it measures your roof from your address.

If you are comparing quotes, ask each roofer how many squares they measured and how they figured waste. A low quote that underestimated the roof size often turns into a change order once the job starts.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does a bundle of shingles cover?

For most architectural shingles, about 33 square feet, because 3 bundles cover a 100 square foot square. Thicker shingles that come 4 or more bundles to the square cover less per bundle.

How many bundles of shingles for a 2,000 square foot house?

It depends on the roof, not the floor plan. Pitch, overhangs, porches and the garage all change the roof area. A 2,000 square foot home can have anywhere from about 20 squares (two stories, simple roof) to more than 35 (one story with an attached garage and a steep pitch), which is roughly 60 to over 105 bundles of field shingles before waste. A measurement report gives the real number.

Are 3-tab shingles also 3 bundles per square?

Usually, yes. Check the wrapper to be sure. We repair 3-tab roofs but do not install new 3-tab; our packages use architectural shingles or metal.

How many bundles does it take to fix a few missing shingles?

Often one bundle or less. Our roof repair price book lists repairs by the number of bundles replaced, starting at up to one bundle.
